When a base slides over snow, slight friction is created thus generating a very thin layer of water which effectively allows for the ski to slide and gain momentum. 

In a nutshell, ski wax improves the efficency of this melting of snow, making your skis faster, while adding a layer of protection from the harsher crystals and possible contaminants.
